Waiting on Ducklings
I grew up with books that described a mamma duck crossing the road with each of her chicks in a single file line behind her, but part of me always thought that it was just a fable.  Then you get the stories every now and then from Washington DC about the Duck and her chicks that were being protected wherever they go, and those are good interest stories.
What I never expected was to witness it myself.
I was less than a block from work, on my way home after an exhausting day/week when a young woman ran right in front of my car, holding her hand out for me to stop. There, as I looked to the left, was exactly what I had envisioned all those years of the “duck train.” The lead mama duck was just crossing the street to a man-made lake on the other side, and her little ducklings were happily following in a single file line, not caring what was zooming past or towards them.
The young woman stood around them and kept the cars stopped until each one of the little ducks had jumped up the curb and they just continued on their way to the lake.
Sometimes, after a hard day/week you just have to sit back and smile.
