No Limit Tourney Results

Tonight I did something stupid – I deposited another $50 into my pokerstars.com account and entered a no-limit tourney. After a bunch of ups and downs, I ended up #300 something out of 1800. Not bad, but about 150 outside of a dollar prize. I then went into a $1/$2 blind limit room and proceeded to lose all the way down to about $13. I eventually worked my way back up to $57, so I actually ended the day in the black.

Unfortunately for me, after you make a deposit, you have to wait 24-48 hours for it to actually clear before you can withdraw the funds back to your bank account.

It was fun, but I am enjoying Chris Moneymaker’s game for quick poker fixes. I haven’t bought the other one for WPT or WSOP (whatever the hell it was) – but for now the Moneymaker game gives the impression of being “live opponents” – so hopefully it will save me from myself.

Won't Get My Vote

So there I was Saturday, all ready for the yearly rivalry college football game of Nebraska vs. Iowa State. Granted I was alone in my viewing, but for some reason the cool breeze coming through the window and the stockpile of Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper in fridge made me think of the Martha Stewart movie I saw the previous week on TV…

“Its a good day.”

Then, a knock on the door. It is some dude named Rice running for City Council. He explains to me how he thought it would be a great time to go door to door and meet people, since everybody will be at home watching the game. I took his little flyer and sent him on his way, encouraging him that oh yes, that was a GREAT idea.

WTF?

Let’s see, the most highly watched college football game for the season, and this schmuck thought it would be a “great” idea to go interrupt it for as many people as he could and ask them to vote for him for City Council.

Riiiiiight.

Theatre Musings

So the local “new releases” theatre (run by Cinemark) finally got into the Internet age and is now offering online ticket purchasing and pickup at the theatre. Well its about time!

But, there is bad news.

Not only can you now purchase your tickets online with your credit card…. now the snack bar also gladly accepts MC, Visa and of course American Express.

Ack.

I went to see Serenity this weekend, and only one register was open, and as my luck would have it, the person in front of me used this new functionality and attempted to pay with her credit card. Attempted. After running it through about one zillion times, it finally went though – but how aggrivating is that?! Can’t people bring enough money to the movie theatre for their pop and popcorn fix?

Online ticketing through credit card: yay
Accepting credit cards at the snack bar: boo

Studio System and Superman

Perhaps it was the recent television coverage of the massive fires burning up Ventura County where I once lived, or maybe it was the recent Zod for President entry, but tonight I decided to watch the Superman DVD I rented from the local library.

More correct would be – I decided to watch the flip-side bonus features first. The bonus features have two main options, Documentaries and Other Special Features. I went straight to the documentaries and chose the first one, and was presented immediately with Marc McClure (Jimmy Olsen) walking around inside and outside of Warner Bros.

Seeing him walk around the grounds of Warner Bros., a place I grew to know and love, touched something inside of me I thought I had forgotten. When I first arrived in LA, walking around the WB lot free with my WB ID was new, exciting and made me feel important. Even more impressive to me, was the fact the grill cooks at the commissary knew what I wanted as soon as I walked in (turkey burger, curly fires).

After the first year, however, the newness tended to wear off, and I would hastily eat my turkey burger and then wander down the western set and through the “forest” area and try to imagine the General Lee come through, kicking up leaves. Or maybe I would imagine there was a real El Train near the tracks that stood by County General of ER. But mainly, I took it for granted.

But here on my TV set this evening it was there, blue skies, green plants, tan buildings, and the shield I came to know and love. A shield I took pride in being a part of. A shield I was devastated to leave. I was a very lucky 22 year olf to be given the chance to work for the studio, not even out of college. And I took it for granted. Now back in Iowa, I am an Internet veteran. I like the place I currently work – but part of me longs to once again walk through that lot, knowing both it and myself were now working for the same company.

I’ll get back there. Someday. It may be next year, five years, or ten years. Some day, I will make it back.

And – I will get my turkey burger. With curly fries.
