A Clean Desk is a Sign

Well, Ive been cleaning out my apartment on-and-off over the last week or so. There is a certain satisfying feeling when you get done cleaning a room and know you won’t be embarassed if somebody happens to stop over. During this cleaning cycle, I have thrown away several things that I never thought I would get rid of. Things that I once considered important, things that I have no idea why I had in the first place.

As I stare at the $50 computer books on my bookshelf, I can’t help but think how I could have better spent that money. I used to think I was very thrifty and cautious with spending. But as I look around and ask myself “why did I buy that?” – the opposite becomes clear.

Its a lot like when you DO actually have some money when you go into a store. When you don’t have money you see things and say “oooh I want that” or “that would be nice.” But if you have enough to buy those things, you are a bit more careful. “Do I REALLY want that?”

I’m trying to be more careful on what I spend these days. I look at everything I buy as the result of my working at a computer for the money. Is that Xbox 360 really worth 4 days of work?

Who knows how long it will last, but for now my apartment stays clean and hopefully my pocket book stays full.
