Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Get Haircuts

I went straight from work to get my hair cut today and couldn’t believe it would be an hour wait. I looked around the crowded waiting area of Great Clips, muttered something under my breath and left. I went back home and played some Star Wars Galaxies for a while and an hour and a half later went back to the mall, knowing for certain nobody would be getting a hair cut around dinner time. Still an hour wait.

Grrrrr.

So I got back in the car and went to the other Great Clips over by Hastings, and to my surprise there was no wait. When I was done I hopped in my car and headed home – and just when I was almost home, KGGO announced the 9th caller would win tickets to an upcoming concert.

Now, I have been trying to win tickets at KGGO for years, and I always get the busy signal. The last time I won anything on the radio was back in Los Angeles when I won tickets to the Mission Impossible 2 premiere on KROQ. Always. I have them on my voice dial so all I have to do is push a button and say “KGGO!” and it dials. So, I push the button and say the magic words… busy signal. Of course. Push the button again, say the words, and the phone beeps at me “Please say again.” So I say it again and it rings.

Interesting.

It keeps ringing. So either I have the wrong number or I’ll be called #8. Brian James answers and as soon as I hear him say “KGGO, who’s this?” I know I did finally get through. So I make some jokes about cruising around Ames (a very short cruise) and what not and he tells me I won the tickets. I give a Homer-esque “woo hoo” and then he asks if I’m a big Bob Dylan fan. At that moment I had a mind blank and couldn’t think of ONE song. So I say “oh here and there.” He asks how about Willie Nelson. Now, this is a “classic rock” station that always makes fun of their sister station of “goat ropers” (country music) so I reply the last I saw Willie Nelson in concert was when he appeared with Tom and Roseanne Arnold at Farm Aid a loooong time ago. I get another laugh, and finish out the call with the usual yelling – KGGO!”

So, now I have Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson tickets for July 9th in Cedar Rapids. Too bad I already made my road trip to CR a week or so ago to get the Commodore 64. I’ll have to see if I can do another one.

So, guess I can’t complain about never winning anything anymore. :)

Oprah's New Grapefruit

Talk show hostess Oprah Winfrey is describing the most humiliating moment of her life recently, saying the French store Heremes denied her access to the up-scale shoppe on her recent visit. Proving once again that viewers of her show are nothing more than grapefruit, the backlash has started as the millions of Oprah viewers send nasty emails and letters to the boutique.

Nevermind that she tried to enter the store at 6:45PM when the store closes at 6:30PM. Oprah claims there were others shopping in the store and the security and staff would not let her in.

WTF?!

How many times have you shown up at a business, or a bank, and have had the doors locked but the remaining patrons are still checking out? More times than I can count. But that isn’t good enough for Oprah. Nope. Stores need to LET HER IN, because she’s a celebrity.

On ABC‘s Good Morning America, Diane Sawyer called the incident another case of “Have a nice day racism.”

Racism? For not letting somebody in after-hours?

This just goes to prove that celebrities like Oprah have had doors opened to them (pun intended) that others have not. They have lived the good life and everybody bowing to their whim so long, that when somebody DOESN’T bend over backwards, suddenly its because she’s black. Or she’s a woman.

Come on!!!

It was AFTER BUSINESS HOURS for crying out loud.

According to a close friend, she is going to talk about the incident on an upcoming episode of her talk show. Big surprise. Hermes has even cracked under the pressure and issued an apology to the superstar. An apology for not opening the store especially for her?

As John Stossel says… Give Me a Break!

Received Just A Geek

Received my Just a Geek book from The Wils today. I read it a few months ago but think I will devour it again to see what I might have missed the first time. He also included a form letter (stating how much he hated form letters) and a little postcard thingy about Dancing Barefoot, his other book.

Thanks, Wil!

Road Trip

I took a road trip to Cedar Rapids, Iowa over the weekend. I have posted a photo blog on my gallery if you want to see the excitement as it unfolded. The trip was fun and I accomplished everything I set out to do… so… go look at the photos!

Found Some Pics

Found some pics of my first visit to the Babylon 5 set (before I was hired by WB) – they are from just about exactly 10 years ago.

Egads.

I will have to scan them in again… I did once before when they were originally taken but I have misplaced them. Any comments about my awesome striped shirt will be deleted.
